CBmeter- a new medical device for early screening of metabolic diseases
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a highly prevalent disease worldwide which is asymptomatic in about 44% of patients being critical to search for new ways of early diagnosis. Recent studies have demonstrated that the etiology of this disease may be associated with alterations in the function of the carotid body (CB), a chemosensor organ located within the bifurcation of the carotid artery. In animal models of metabolic syndrome it was observed that the CBs are overactivated, underlying diseases such as obesity, hypertension and T2DM. This discovery provided a new paradigm in the neuroendocrinology field, suggesting that diagnostic function of the CBs has predictive value for the development of metabolic diseases. Despite this fact, it is not common in clinical practice to look at the CBs as organs associated with endocrine dysfunction and we believe this is probably due to the nonexistence of a user-friendly, portable medical device that diagnosis the function of the CBs.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
/ABSTRACT; this work is concerned with instability properties of solutions of the well-known Schrodinger equation in the presence of a uniform magnetic field. We prove that exist instability by the flow of the evolution equation in some conditions. Moreover, the trajectories used to exhibit instability are global and uniformly bounded

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Adherence to Exercise Prescription: The case of Cardiac Rehabilitation Programs
Cardiac Rehabilitation Programs (CRPs) are an important tool of secondary prevention and their implementation within health services, despite the uneven geographical distribution, has been receiving attention from decision-makers in recent years. Adherence to the CRPs is one of the great challenges faced by the multidisciplinary team, and there are several strategies to maintain adherence, particularly in CRP-Phase III, which occurs outside the hospital environment. One of the strategies followed is the use of remote performance monitoring and recording of possible alert symptoms. With the pandemic
due to COVID-19, these challenges have become even more evident as Phase II programs have been suspended, thus increasing the importance of the home-based CRPs. In this work, the results of a study aiming to understand the impact of the pandemic on adherence to the prescription of exercise and the perception of patients regarding the effects of physical activity on health conditions are shown. The results
indicate that the pandemic did not have a major effect on the adherence to home-based exercises, in particular, in patients undergoing programs using a telemonitoring system. Moreover, the perception of the importance of physical activity for health and well-being was reinforced in the context of the pandemic.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Complex network model for COVID-19: human behavior, pseudo-periodic solutions and multiple epidemic waves
We propose a mathematical model for the transmission dynamics of SARS-CoV-2
in a homogeneously mixing non constant population, and generalize it to a model
where the parameters are given by piecewise constant functions. This allows us
to model the human behavior and the impact of public health policies on the
dynamics of the curve of active infected individuals during a COVID-19 epidemic
outbreak. After proving the existence and global asymptotic stability of the
disease-free and endemic equilibrium points of the model with constant
parameters, we consider a family of Cauchy problems, with piecewise constant
parameters, and prove the existence of pseudo-oscillations between a
neighborhood of the disease-free equilibrium and a neighborhood of the endemic
equilibrium, in a biologically feasible region. In the context of the COVID-19
pandemic, this pseudo-periodic solutions are related to the emergence of
epidemic waves. Then, to capture the impact of mobility in the dynamics of
COVID-19 epidemics, we propose a complex network with six distinct regions
based on COVID-19 real data from Portugal. We perform numerical simulations for
the complex network model, where the objective is to determine a topology that
minimizes the level of active infected individuals and the existence of
topologies that are likely to worsen the level of infection. We claim that this
methodology is a tool with enormous potential in the current pandemic context,
and can be applied in the management of outbreaks (in regional terms) but also
to manage the opening/closing of borders.Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures, submitted 5-Oct-202

Development of a mixed-meal that impacts carotid-body mediated cardiorespiratory and metabolic parameters - a pilot study
The carotid bodies (CB) have been recently implicated in the genesis of metabolic diseases in animal models. The CBs respond to circulating insulin to increase heart rate, respiratory rate and blood glucose levels. In humans, this mechanism is not well characterized.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
